As of today, the biggest dance-rock band in the world has yet to be born.
While the buzz around pop-rock-inspired dance-songs like The Weeknd’s “Can’t Feel My Face” is palpable, a new wave of dance-friendly pop is in the making.
The next wave of pop is the “dance dance pop,” or DDP, movement that emerged in the mid-1990s.
As we previously reported, this movement has seen major artists like Katy Perry, Drake, and Lady Gaga embrace dance-dance pop.
This dance-driven style of music is gaining more and more traction, as dance music has become increasingly popular in recent years, according to Billboard.
Now, dance-punk acts like Vampire Weekend and Skrillex are jumping into the dance-core scene.
These bands are taking dance-based music and incorporating it into a more contemporary approach, while simultaneously using pop influences to spice up the tracks.
But as we noted last week, there are some major hurdles to jump over before the next wave is fully formed.
First and foremost, it takes time to build a successful dance-music career.
It’s a slow, arduous process, with a long and frustrating wait for those with the skills to put their music out.
If a dance-band has a chance to emerge, it could have a massive impact on the future of dance music.
Second, it’s a hard sell to get fans to buy their music.
The first wave of DDP artists was born in 2009 when dance-rap group Zedd teamed up with fellow British DJ/producer Naughty By Nature.
The two bands released their debut EP, “The Vivid,” in 2009, and have since released two more singles, “Vivid” and “Vibrations,” each of which has racked up more than 100 million YouTube views.
At the time, Zedd, Naughty by Nature, and Zedd fans were just getting to know each other.
Fast forward to today and DDP has seen some notable names join the fold.
After signing to Warner Bros. Records, pop singer-songwriter Selena Gomez released her debut EP “Signed” in 2011, while the Canadian duo Lady Gaga and Drake joined forces for their second single, “Sign.”
Drake, however, has yet the same impact as the duo.
Drake’s career has been on the downswing since he announced his retirement from the game.
He released “Canelo,” the first single from his upcoming album, “30 for 30,” in 2013.
And it looks like Selena’s album could be her final effort.
Dance-punk act Zedd recently announced they would be reuniting to form a new dance-leaning group called Zedd and the Vivid.
We are thrilled to welcome singer Selena to Zedd for the first time on the record!
We are also excited to bring the Zedd label and our producer Naughty and the talented Vivid artists together for this new venture!
We have no doubt this is going to be a great record, as Zedd has been known for releasing innovative music since his early days.
We can’t wait to see what the new Zedd will be all about!
Selena will be joining the band as lead singer, along with producer and producer Nicky Romero.
With a strong roster of collaborators and an incredible tracklist of tracks, Zeds Vivid will be a big step forward in dance music for years to come.
